Ovulation Calculator
Predict your ovulation date and fertile window based on your cycle length and start date.
Cycle Information
How to Use
- 1Enter the date of your last period (first day of bleeding).
- 2Enter your average cycle length (21–45 days; default 28).
- 3Optionally adjust your luteal phase length (default 14 days).
- 4View your ovulation date, fertile window, and the next 6 cycles on the calendar.
Understanding Your Result
Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period starts — this 14-day interval is called the luteal phase and is relatively constant for each individual. The fertile window includes the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, because sperm can survive up to five days in the reproductive tract while an egg survives only 12 to 24 hours after release. This asymmetry means the days leading up to ovulation are actually more important for conception than the day of ovulation itself. Physical signs of ovulation include a surge in luteinizing hormone (detectable with ovulation predictor kits), changes in cervical mucus to a clear stretchy consistency, and mild one-sided pelvic pain known as mittelschmerz. This calculator provides estimates based on averages and works most reliably for people with regular cycles. If your cycle length varies significantly from month to month due to stress, illness, travel, or hormonal conditions such as PCOS, the results will be less accurate. In such cases, tracking additional signs like basal body temperature or using ovulation predictor kits can improve accuracy. This calculator should not be used as a method of contraception.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period starts (this 14-day period is called the luteal phase). The fertile window includes the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, as sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract. The calculator subtracts the luteal phase from your cycle length to estimate ovulation, then counts back 5 days to find the fertile window start.
This calculator provides an estimate based on average cycle lengths and a standard 14-day luteal phase. Individual cycles can vary due to stress, illness, travel, and other factors. If your cycle length varies significantly from month to month, the results will be less accurate. Track additional signs like cervical mucus or use ovulation predictor kits for better accuracy.
A normal menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. The cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Variations of a few days are common and usually not a cause for concern. However, consistently irregular cycles (varying by more than 7–9 days) may warrant evaluation by a healthcare provider.
While the chance is lower, it is still possible — though uncommon — to get pregnant outside the fertile window. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, and occasionally a woman may ovulate earlier or later than predicted, especially if her cycle length varies. If you are actively trying to conceive, having intercourse every 2–3 days throughout your cycle maximizes your chances regardless of the exact ovulation date. If you are avoiding pregnancy, rely on proven contraception methods rather than calendar-based tracking alone, as the fertility window can shift unexpectedly.
Stress can significantly delay or even prevent ovulation by affecting the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. High cortisol levels from chronic stress can disrupt the release of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone), which in turn affects LH and FSH — the hormones that trigger ovulation. This means your fertile window may shift later than the calculator predicts, or you may skip ovulation entirely in a given cycle. If you notice consistent irregularities, consider stress management techniques and consult a healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disorders.
