The calorie targets shown correspond to different weight goals: losing 0.25, 0.5, or 1 kg per week requires a daily deficit of approximately 275, 550, or 1,100 calories respectively (since one kilogram of body fat stores roughly 7,700 calories). Maintaining your current weight requires zero deficit, and gaining weight requires a surplus of the same amounts.

Macronutrient Breakdown

The macronutrient breakdown at maintenance shows a balanced ratio of 25 percent protein, 45 percent carbohydrates, and 30 percent fat. Protein provides 4 calories per gram, carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, and fat provides 9 calories per gram.

Body Composition Estimates

Ideal body weight is estimated using three classic formulas — Devine (1974), Miller (1983), and Robinson (1983) — averaged together. Body fat percentage is estimated from BMI using the Deurenberg formula, and lean body mass (fat-free mass) is calculated using the Boer formula.
